The Grand Square is situated in the city centre of Kortrijk. The square is surrounded by some of Kortrijk’s finest sightseeing attractions. You have the City Hall, the Belfry and the authentic houses.
The City Hall of Kortrijk has a late-gothic, early Renaissance style and is definitely worth it to take a guided tour. Inside you will find a magnificent interior decorated with old wall paintings, maps and beautiful glasswork.
The Belfry of Kortrijk is a tower standing in the middle of the grand square. It used to be a part of a much more impressive building being the ‘Cloth Hall’. Eventually the cloth hall lost its original purpose and they transformed it into houses. During the end of the 18th century they decided to destroy the building to make a healthier neighbourhood. Due to protest of the citizens of Kortrijk they let the Belfry stay. Furthermore, has the Belfry been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage since 1999.
The authentic houses surrounding the square where in the old days houses but are nowadays mostly bars and restaurants. This makes the square an ideal place to relax during your visit of Kortrijk.
The Grand Square has got its changes through the years. Around the Cloth hall there were 5 different squares. Because of the destruction of the Cloth hall all the squares around it have been merged together into one.
