The Lowered Banks of the Lys

Between the economic heart of the city and the Buda Island, you will find one of Kortrijk’s most beautiful attractions: The Lowered Banks of the Lys. This tourist hotspot is the meeting place for many young people because of its central location in the middle of the city, close to numerous catering establishments. Along the banks of the Lys, you will find steps where you can picnic and sunbathe along the water. The square has a very pleasant atmosphere because of the river and the various boats that sail past every day, hence why it is the calling card and symbol of Kortrijk.

The Lowered Banks of the Lys were constructed in 2018 for one reason: to strengthen the contact with the water. The quay walls were descended and the level of the square was lowered to half a metre above the water. It is now one big square where the Lys flows through in two parts. You can walk, cycle and laze around while being consumed by the best that Kortrijk has to offer. Throughout the year, various events are organised along the banks of the Lys, such as music concerts, theatre plays, water shows and much more! This beautiful location has been awarded as the most beautiful public space in Flanders.
