The Theatre Square

In the middle of the city, between the most famous shopping street ‘Lange Steenstraat’ and the well-known entertainment district of Kortrijk ’ ‘t Straatje’, lies this impressive square full of cultural history. This car-free square is located within walking distance of the station and a few minutes from the ‘K in Kortrijk’ shopping centre. The Theatre Square owes its name to the beautiful theatre in the middle of it, and has a few other attractive spots, such as the impressive fountain ‘de Golf’ and the various patrician houses. It is also an ideal location for young people to go out for dinner and to enjoy themselves in the numerous cafés. Café ‘Les Amis’ is the best-known youth café on this square.

The rectangular square was created after the demolition of the Great Cloth Hall, which was heavily damaged after the bombing during World War II. The building was completely burnt down and therefore was not rebuilt. After the construction of the theatre, the name of the square was chosen by the city council of that time. The square, as it looks today, was a combination of the ‘Schouwburgstraat’, ‘Burgermeester Reynaertstraat’ a.k.a. ‘t Straatje and the ‘Havermarkt’. The Kortrijk Theatre hosts numerous events such as concerts, exhibitions, plays and comedy shows. During the year, various events take place that you can attend, some examples are the Christmas market and the Easter Fair that are being held annually. Interesting to know is that the city theatre offers special rates and extra discounts for students and young people under 26, just to give you one more reason to visit this hotspot!
